Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has branded fresh reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The 45-year-old, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, named Chelsea boss in June 2024, is under contract running through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year available.
"It doesn't bother me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions Following Previous Remarks
Maresca's latest comments follow after he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those original remarks had sparked considerable talk of a possible rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When asked if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about various topics. But about the Everton press conference, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return ahead of schedule, possibly available for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: An 'Open Wound'
The perceived strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter in the open, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the disagreement unaddressed.
The atmosphere during these press conferences has become increasingly strained, leading to concerns it could impact what has otherwise been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable Champions League draw with good performances in their remaining games.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this off-field situation might begin to affect a squad that was beginning to appear settled.
