Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has announced that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will face legal action over accusations that he provoked "violent electoral rallies".
A minimum of 4 protesters have been lost their lives during confrontations between police and military and demonstrators since the presidential election on 12 October, with 92-year-old President Paul Biya securing an eighth presidential mandate.
Issa Tchiroma insists that he emerged victorious, a statement rejected by Biya's ruling party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).
Forceful measures by security personnel on demonstrators have worried the global community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for caution.
On Tuesday, the interior minister charged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he referred to as "unauthorized" protests resulting in the fatalities, and also condemned him for announcing success in the presidential race.
He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators involved in an rebellious scheme" will also be prosecuted.
Paul Biya, who took control in 1982 and is now the world's oldest head of state, obtained the October 12 election with over half of the ballots, compared to just over a third for the challenger, according to the electoral authority.
Tchiroma Bakary is has not yet commented to the government's decision to try him, but he had previously announced that he refused to acknowledge a fraudulent outcome - and that he was fearless of being arrested.
On election result day, he claimed that gunmen shot on protesters assembled near his residence in Garoua, killing at least two individuals.
On Tuesday, the interior minister revealed that an investigation would be initiated into clashes before and after the declaration of the vote outcome.
"During these attacks, some of the individuals involved died," he stated, without providing a specific number of protesters who have been fatally injured in the clashes.
The minister noted that multiple members of the police and military also received serious injuries.
Even though the interior minister maintained the situation nationwide was now manageable, protesters remain active in certain regions of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the thoroughfares.
Analysts caution that the political turmoil could push the nation into a governmental instability.
