Former UK Soldier Accused of Killing Kenyan Female Appears in Courtroom
A suspect has appeared in court as deportation processes commenced in the case of Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan national, a woman of Kenyan origin who was killed near a UK military installation in 2012.
Robert Purkiss, 38, who is originally from Greater Manchester, was presented at the magistrates' court in Westminster on Friday, and stated to the court he would challenge the extradition. Sources suggest that he was detained on the evening of Thursday.
An arrest warrant for the defendant was authorized by a Nairobi court in September. The prosecution stated before the Kenyan court that the accused had been facing a single count, of homicide, and that the government of Kenya would request his deportation to face charges.
He served formerly as a medical attendant with the regiment of the Duke of Lancaster, the infantry regiment for the north-west of England, including on missions to Afghanistan.
Agnes Wanjiru, 21 years old, a beautician who had a young daughter, disappeared after a night out, and her corpse was located 60 days later in the area of the accommodation where she had previously spotted.
Not a single person had previously been detained or charged in relation to her passing. Purkiss’s arrest was the result of a recent detective probe, which was initiated after a report in 2021 by a weekly publication, in which the newspaper contacted several serving and ex-military personnel in the unit.
This inquiry has been headed by Kenyan detectives, which, under a bilateral defence agreement, holds legal authority in the matter.
