Missing Johann Sebastian Bach Pieces Performed for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years
Previously unknown musical pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach have been unveiled and performed in the European nation for the first time in 320 years.
Germany's Cultural Affairs Minister the government representative described the finding of the two pieces a "important event for the musical community".
They initially attracted notice of a Bach researcher in the early nineties when he was documenting Bach manuscripts at the Royal Library of Belgium.
The organ works - the D minor Chaconne and G minor Chaconne - were dating unknown and unsigned. Mr Wollny spent the following three decades working to authenticate the origin of the pieces.
Memorable Concert
They were performed at the historic Leipzig church in Leipzig, where the composer is interred and where he was employed as a cantor for over two decades.
The compositions were played by Dutch organist Ton Koopman, who said he was proud to be able to play them for the initial performance in over three centuries.
He said the works were "of a very high quality" and would be "a valuable resource for modern musicians, as they are also well-suited for reduced-scale organs".
Musical Importance
They are believed to have been written during Bach's formative years, when he was serving as an organ teacher in the municipality of the Thuringian town in the German region.
The scholar, who is now the head of the Bach research center in the municipality, said they displayed several qualities unique to the musical genius.
"In terms of style, the compositions also feature elements that can be observed in Bach's compositions from that time, but not in those of other musicians," he said.
They are thought to have been written down in the early eighteenth century by Bach's apprentice, the historical figure.
At a presentation of the pieces, the researcher said he was "99.99% sure that the composer had written the pair of works" and they have now been added into the recognized inventory of his compositions.
