The player will miss for South Africa's upcoming test matches.
Springbok front-rower Wessels has received a ban of nine matches for making contact with Josh Murphy's genitals during the Blue Bulls' United Rugby Championship win over the Irish province.
This event happened in the 18th minute of the close contest in Galway on last Friday, with opposing player Josh Murphy receiving a 20-minute red card after responding aggressively by striking Wessels on the head area.
Following Murphy complained to the match official, the event was examined by the television match official, who found no definitive proof.
The Bulls player stayed on the pitch until he was substituted in the later stages of the game.
While the URC confirmed that Murphy's temporary sending-off was rescinded by a disciplinary panel, the Springbok was found to have breached the code of conduct, which specifies:
"Any athlete should not do anything that is against the principles of fair play. Such behavior covers touching, twisting or compressing the genitals."
Disciplinary officials determined that the incident reached the level for dismissal and warranted a 12-week suspension, the shortest suspension under international rugby regulations for such an violation.
However, Wessels' ban was reduced by 21 days because of his cooperative behavior during the hearing and his good record.
The forward and the Pretoria-based team are entitled to challenge the decision, but currently, the ban will prevent the 24-year-old out of the Springboks' autumn Tests against Japan, France, the Azzurri and the Irish team.
He will also miss the Bulls' league matches against Glasgow, the Emirates Lions and the Sharks, as well as European cup fixtures with Bègles and Saints.
Wessels has won ten international appearances for the Springboks and was included in their tri-nations champion team during the recent tournament.
The Connacht player, in contrast, is eligible to play against the Irish rivals in Saturday's domestic clash after being exonerated.
