Southport killer's brother was afraid he would kill, inquiry learns
The sibling of the Seaside town killer revealed his family "were unable to handle" of their son and he worried his brother would fatally harm a member of their family, a public inquiry has been told.
The individual, a teenager, murdered three kids at a celebrity-themed lesson on July 29, 2024.
The hearing, conducted at a civic building, learned the attacker's brother the older brother informed a friend there was a risk of his relative "committing an act deadly."
The investigation was told Dion messaged his friend over the digital service: "Arguments are terrifying because of the threat of a fatality."
He said his relative resembled the violent character in the picture the thriller.
Rising Hostility
The inquiry heard the brother was identified with a neuromuscular disorder at the early teens which caused him needing mobility assistance and his mother and father helping him more.
In response to the lawyer, legal representative, if that affected their bond he replied: "There was tension that came about."
The brother acknowledged his brother appeared to resent this change.
He revealed to the investigation that after the relatives relocated from Cardiff to their new location his brother's moods declined and he would have "physical explosions."
The hearing heard he became "increasingly wary" of his relative, who would strike him often.
He said: "I was forced to be wary if I did speak to him because every argument could become an altercation."
'Genuine concerns'
He revealed his sibling became significantly more violent after he was removed from his school in Formby, Merseyside, in October 2019.
He left for university in the following period and the two communicated rarely "as he was unaccustomed to having me around."
Proceedings was informed of a message the brother messaged a contact on the service in which he mentioned his sibling was annoyed by him having conversations after dark because of the limited soundproofing in their house.
He further revealed to his contact there was a danger of "him doing something deadly."
He wrote: "The fights are frightening because of the risk of someone dying."
Mr Boyle inquired: "You had serious fears that your brother would kill a member of your relatives?"
Dion replied: "If things escalated to that extent."
The counsel inquired how his mother and father dealt with the attacker's violent behaviour.
"There was no point to try and punish him," he stated. "Additionally, there was a significant danger in proceeding that way.
"We mentioned there was a widespread threat to safety in casual discussion, if you attempt to challenge him... it could provoke violence."
When the lawyer inquired if his family had lost control of his relative, the brother agreed.
When asked about his brother reminding him of a persona from the film the thriller, Dion said: "I've been told that persona's intended as a dangerous individual and that's why I chose that description there."
The brother revealed the last interaction he had with his relative was in the summer of 2023.
He acknowledged that their mother and father requested the killer to say goodbye to him as he was leaving to see his friends and his brother tossed a container at him but the entryway shut before it hit.
The hearing continues.
