Suspected Bondi Beach Gunmen Acted Independently and Received No Instruction in the Southeast Asian Nation, Investigators Confirm.
The pair of accused individuals who carried out the deadly shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, that took 15 lives, appear to have been lone actors, as stated by national authorities.
Authorities also confirmed that the 50-year-old Sajid Akram, and his 24-year-old son Naveed Akram journeyed to the Philippines on 1 November. Their itinerary involved landing in the main city Manila before traveling onward that same day to Davao City. The father and son returned to Sydney on 29 November.
Lack of Proof of Preparation During Visit
Police have stated the duo did not partake in any form of terrorist training or "planning" during their visit in the Philippines. Preliminary investigations from local authorities indicate they "rarely left" their accommodation.
The incident—labeled as Australia's worst mass shooting since 1996—has been officially designated a terrorist incident.
"We are currently reviewing the material," she stated, adding that preliminary evaluations suggest that "the two men are alleged to have operated independently."
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett briefed media on Tuesday that security camera video showing the alleged gunmen's activities in the Philippines had been handed over to Australian authorities.
"Our investigation shows no evidence to indicate these alleged offenders were affiliated with a wider network, or were instructed by external parties to execute an incident," Commissioner Barrett said.
However, the men were also not in the Philippines for tourism, Commissioner Barrett added. She stressed that, as the investigation is ongoing, additional details might come to light.
Ideology and Legal Charges
Earlier, the nation's leader Anthony Albanese remarked it looks as though both accused attackers were "influenced by ISIS" extremist views.
During the shooting, Sajid Akram was killed by responding officers. He and his son Naveed—both armed with rifles—allegedly shot participants at the Hanukkah celebration.
Naveed Akram, who was injured and taken to hospital after the attack, has been charged with 59 crimes. These encompass 15 charges of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. He is scheduled to appear in court in April.
Travel Particulars
In the aftermath following the shooting, immigration authorities in the Philippines stated that the father had arrived in the country using an foreign passport, while his son used an domestic passport.
The two had stated the metropolis of Davao as their final destination. Their booked return flight to Australia was for Sydney.
