The Princess of Wales's Yearly Christmas Carol Concert Honours Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of carols, music and readings from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Kindness and Compassion
The focus of the event, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.
A Steady Comeback
The princess has been making her own measured re-emergence to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Musical Talent and Access
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to talented youth performers supported by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the trust, with grants helping towards musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Taking to the stage will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the perfect culmination."
The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
